Oslo National Academy of the Arts is Norway’s largest college of higher education in the field of visual and performing art, with over 550 students, 200 employees and more than 900 guest teachers and teachers on short-term contracts, all of whom are leading practitioners in their own discipline. Our aim is to educate artists and designers with the ability to both reflect on, and experiment in their chosen field and make lasting contributions to the diversity of our society.
In autumn 2010, all KHiO’s faculties were located together in new, renovated, customized and purposed designed buildings on the Seilduken campus in Oslo. The Oslo National Academy of the Arts currently offers 24 study programmes, and consists of six departments: Art and Craft, Design, The Academy of Fine Art, The Academy of Dance, The Academy of Opera, and The Academy of Theatre.
Oslo National Academy of the Arts is a public state funded institution with no tuition fee for students.

The Department of Art and Craft
The department seeks to elaborate on the relationship between art and life, on matters of materiality (production, sustainability, the global), on design and architecture, and on artistic practice in social and political contexts in a contemporary perspective. The department’s ideology derives from the early British Arts and Crafts movement and the German Bauhaus workshop traditions with the ambition of integrating art into the social, public, and private spheres. The department offers an art education in which the contextual significance of materials is as important as their intrinsic properties.
Emphasis is placed on research of craft as an expanded field, on the application and integration of art in private and public spheres, on interdisciplinary practices, and the workshop as a site for artistic activity. The department has access to the most sophisticated and well-equipped workshops, tools and machines. The study programmes at the department offers specialisation in the fields of textile art, printmaking and drawing, ceramic art, metal art and jewellery. Interdisciplinary approaches to medium- and material-based art are encouraged.
In 2015, 27 students are accepted for the master programmes (21 students for medium- and material-based art, six for art and public space).
The Master programme (MFA) in Medium- and Material-Based Art
The Master programme is a two-year post-graduate programme specialising in medium- and material based art. The programme involves one-to-one tutorials, group tutorials, seminars, workshops, writing courses, contextualisation, etc. The student’s own artistic work and theoretical studies forms the core of the programme. The programme structure is divided into three key subjects: the student’s artistic work (the Master project); contextualization; communication and presentation (exhibiting).

The Master programme (MFA) in Art and Public Space
Art and Public Space is a new master programme at Oslo National Academy of the Arts. The two-year study programme focuses on art and its relationship with the public sphere. The aim is to critically examine the spatial, social and political issues around the problematic subjects of public and space. The main focal themes of the programme are the development and creation of art for public spaces, and the analysis and investigation of the impact of art on such settings, its reception and relevant social structures. The programme actively encourages students to develop their practice through various methods of research and analytical thinking, as well as practical engagement with sites and situations found in our society today.
