Tromsø Academy of Contemporary Art at UiT Arctic University of Norway is accepting applications for the international MFA program starting in autumn 2015. The application deadline is March 1.

The Master’s programme is a two-year course in English that aims to give the students a unique footing for their future advancement in research, theory and professional artistic practice. The programme is aimed at emerging artists who seek to deepen their practice in a critical and discursive context where they are encouraged to develop their own initiatives. To contribute to this the master’s programme provides a balanced insight between local and international issues of importance to contemporary society. Completion of the programme earns the students a Master Degree in Contemporary Art.

Tromsø Academy of Contemporary Art aims to promote independent, critical and analytical thinking. Students are expected gradually to take increasing responsibility for managing their work to prepare them for professional life beyond the college walls. By means of its teaching and research, the Academy also aims to develop the field of art with new methodologies and a more profound understanding of its nature, and to contribute to the public discourse in this field.

Tromsø Academy of Contemporary Art is the world’s northernmost fine arts college, and accepts only a small number of students each year for courses in fine arts and creative writing. The study environment is internationally composed with students and guest teachers from Europe, North America and Africa, to name a few. The first MA students were enrolled in 2012 and in the autumn of 2013, the Academy had its first PhD students. The Academy is a department in the Faculty of Fine Arts comprising the department of music and drama. This allows collaborations and exchange between the departments. The faculty aims to maintain a high international level and to develop its own particular characteristics, thus offering an alternative to other degree courses in the arts.
