Post-Baccalaureate Certificate program
The Post-Baccalaureate program at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (SMFA), is an intensive, comprehensive year of studio art study and practice for recent college grads, professionals coming from another area of focus, or practicing artists wishing to expand their ongoing studio work. SMFA’s program offers a diverse international community of students, combined with personalized coursework, extensive faculty mentorship, and a collaborative environment of artists from a variety of disciplines.
Post-baccalaureate students design their own path of study during this one-year program. Through research, group critiques, sustained critical inquiry, and peer collaborations, artists are encouraged to develop their skills and experiment across media. A core part of the program is the weekly Post-bac Seminar, which includes discussions on critical theory and contemporary topics, visiting artist lectures, field trips, and conversations with museum curators, gallerists, critics, and collectors. Through a variety of exhibition opportunities, students also learn curatorial and professional skills required for contemporary career in the art world. Our post-bac graduates leave with a critical awareness of contemporary art and practice, and a deeper understanding of their educational and professional goals.
The Studio Diploma
The SMFA Studio Diploma program is an immersive, innovative learning experience, with total focus on studio art practice, with solid cohort building, path of study advising support, three semesters a year, accessing three periods a day. The Diploma coursework draws from the general studio curriculum of the SMFA, which provides broad and deep course offerings across 14 visual arts and media practices.
The program is organized so that students attending full-time can complete the Diploma in two calendar years, including coursework in the day or evenings, as well as summer between their academic years; students choosing part-time enrollment can complete it in three calendar years with study during both summers between academic years. Students can choose between a more intensive or less intensive pace of work that more flexibly fits their personal life needs.
