We are pleased to send you this information about the XIX edition of our Master in Digital Arts at Universitat Pompeu Fabra – IDEC for those who might be interested in interactive art practice and theory in Barcelona.
Our Interdisciplinary Arts Master’s program is designed for graduate students, engineers and working adults to explore questions about digital audiovisual practice and culture within the intersection of the Arts, Humanities, Science and Technology.
General goals
The Master’s degree in Digital Arts aims to contribute to the formation of audiovisual professionals in different aspects of creative production in the field of interactive audiovisual communication.
– To approach both theoretically and experimentally the creative and technical aspects of digital media and their role in cultural production
– To promote expression through information and communication technologies which lead to new visual, musical and interactive art forms
– To provide analytic models and tools to explore specific languages induced by digital media and particularly, interactive audiovisual communication and networking
– Master the techniques for generating, processing and editing of images and sounds, and various software environments for authoring visual, musical and interactive compositions
– To understand, to experiment and to create with code, by learning the generative, algorithmic, and procedural aspects of computer programming as a form of creative writing
– Encourage the use of digital media for the production of innovative and significant works
– To train students in the fundamental changes at the formal, conceptual, contextual, relational and narrative levels of audiovisual culture that occur with the introduction of electronic and digital media
– Encourage and promote new and unconventional forms of human-computer interaction, and the creation of physical, tangible, embedded and embodied interfaces
– To promote contemporary art practices that critically use digital technologies to create aesthetic and meaningful experiences. The emphasis is on the arts, beyond the hegemonic discourse on media and digital culture
Objectives
– To understand the nature of digital media and the cultural and technical aspects that characterize it
– To learn the role of IT in communication and expression, as well as the new visual, musical and interactive forms driven by it.
– To explore the specific languages created by digitalization, particularly focusing on online multimedia communication.
– To gain a solid command of the techniques used to handle and edit images and sound, as well as of several programmes for visual, musical and interactive authorship.
– To understand computer programming, especially as applied to creative tasks.
– To be able to use digital media to produce innovative and meaningful pieces of work.
University Pompeu Fabra, has held 18 editions of the Masters’ program in Digital Arts over the years. This constitutes a solid background. Throughout these years, over three hundred students have successfully completed the program, which has allowed them to improve, in most cases, their capabilities and skills in order to meet the new challenges of their careers.
