What critical potential do participatory projects in cities have? In Berlin and elsewhere, many outreach and educational projects deal with self-determination while exploring social and artistic practices. How can they strengthen the social fabric? On October 29, 2015, Berlin activists and experts will engage in discussions with representatives of the artist groups Kotti-Shop, PASAJ and La Folie Kilomètre from the project We decide how we reside.

Since January 2015, We decide how we reside has invited artists and architects to develop images and concepts for self-determined housing in participatory projects. Residents from the neighborhoods of Berlin-Kreuzberg, Tarlabaşı, Istanbul and Belsunce, Marseille join artist groups from the three cities (Kotti-Shop, PASAJ and La Folie Kilomètre) to shape their visions for living. The results—like an installation of sounds, videos and collages, a TV series, and the performed occupancy of an hotel—are presented in the shared blog.

How to create spaces for communal learning? What concepts and images are needed? The public workshop in Berlin features an input by Sandi Hilal of Campus in Camps (Bethlehem), and contributions by Berlin-based actors and initiatives such as Selda Asal (Apartment Project Berlin), Hamidullah Ehrari (Haus Leo, Arriving in Berlin–A Refugee’s Map), #GentrifiHÄÄ?? (JugendtheaterBüro), kollektiv orangotango, Anne Paffenholz (Wohnwut / Junipark), Azadeh Sharifi (cultural scientist), Robert Shaw (Prinzessinnengärten), and Volkan Türeli (Ballhaus Naunynstraße).

A project by Haus der Kulturen der Welt, in cooperation with Allianz Kulturstiftung.

Haus der Kulturen der Welt is supported by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, as well as by the Federal Foreign Office.
