The Art Department at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is currently welcoming MFA Studio Art applications for 2016 entry.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) is a vibrant and dynamic Master of Fine Arts program at the forefront of art education and with an established history of excellence. Set in the heart of the Research Triangle in North Carolina, UNC brings together students from countries throughout the world, offering a creative and stimulating environment in which to develop a Studio Art practice.

The MFA is a two-academic-year studio-based program with Critical Theory and University teaching components.

For 2016/17 entrants, we are delighted to offer a range of fully funded merit fellowships, teaching fellowships, and partial fellowships for local and national applicants. Teaching and Graduate Assistantships are also available. All eligible students will be considered for these upon admission to the program.

The MFA in Studio Art is an interdisciplinary program. All students matriculate collectively through a rigorous graduate seminar schedule.  All students are afforded the opportunity to work in individual white-box studios across disciplines of Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture and Installation, Social Practice and Public Art, Photography, Moving Image, and Sound. This program provides an intellectual and creative environment in which students can develop their individual potential as a professional artist, conducting independent research in the chosen area of study.

Our faculty of artists and art historians works closely with graduate students in developing the exhibitions at the Ackland Museum and Allcott Gallery and the Hanes Visiting Artist Program, which has included some of the most prominent contemporary critics, curators, artists, and thinkers. Our Visiting Artist Professional program invites art professionals to visit the studios of graduate students and speak with students about their career concerns in a candid setting.

The studio art program is delivered throughstudio critiques, seminars and lectures. The Hanes Visiting Artist Program is an integral part of the MFA in Studio Arts. Recent visiting artists include: Jon Kessler, Thomas Nozkowski, Stephen Vitiello, Shannon Ebner, Lucy Raven, Kevin Jerome Everson, Ruben Ochoa, Clifford Owens, Chitra Ganesh, Dana Schutz, and Liz Magic Laser.

As internationally renowned artists, intellectuals, and educators, the program’s diverse faculty brings a wide array of interdisciplinary and distinct perspectives. This diversity of expertise supports every student’s field of inquiry. Studio Faculty members work one-on-one and in group critiques with MFA students each semester. In addition to developing their practice, students in the Studio Art MFA program take a teaching practicum in their first year to prepare for teaching opportunities awarded to eligible students in their second year. The majority of the MFA students gain experience teaching introductory art classes across a range of disciplines.
