Prefix Institute of Contemporary Art is pleased to present the 11th season of the Urban Field Speakers Series. Co-programmed by Scott McLeod and Jayne Wilkinson, this international lecture series brings together an array of global and local participants, including artists, architects, curators, designers and scholars, who offer unique perspectives on the role of art in transforming the experience of the city. Moderated by a host of local luminaries, past series have featured presentations by such erudite speakers as Chantal Mouffe, Trevor Paglen, Saskia Sassen, Rebecca Solnit and Krzysztof Wodiczko, among many others.

The upcoming season includes the following events:

January 28, 7:30pm
Center for Land Use Interpretation (Matthew Coolidge)
Matthew Farish, moderator
The founding director of CLUI, an organization dedicated to the diffusion of knowledge about the apportioning, utilization and perception of land, speaks about its programme areas and current activities. Moderated by Matthew Farish, associate professor in the Department of Geography and Program in Planning, University of Toronto. Presented in partnership with the Centre for the Study of the United States, Munk School of Global Affairs, University of Toronto.

Sandra Brewster, moderator
The curator, urban theorist, and professor at the University of the Arts London speaks about transnationalism in art, exploring the ways in which multiple cultures of “blackness” are shaping contemporary urban life in the West. Moderated by Sandra Brewster, artist, educator and community-arts facilitator.

March 10, 7:30pm
Victor Burgin
Lisa Steele and Kim Tomczak, moderators
The renowned artist, writer and theorist of the still and moving image speaks about his recent installations, which offer an associative response to cities, buildings and other sites. Moderated by Lisa Steele and Kim Tomczak, artists and co-founders of Vtape. Presented in partnership with Visual Studies in the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design, University of Toronto.

Maria Alejandrina Coates, moderator
The Brazilian artist speaks about her manipulation of public and architectural spaces in order to reveal the ways in which our built environment determines action, behaviour and social relationships. Moderated by Maria Alejandrina Coates, independent curator. Presented in partnership with Latin American-Canadian Art Projects (LACAP).

April 21, 7:30pm
Alexia Tala
Francisco-Fernando Granados, moderator
The independent curator and experimental printmaker reflects upon her experience as co-curator of the 4th San Juan Poly/Graphic Triennial on the subject of Displaced Images/Images in Space. Moderated by Francisco-Fernando Granados, artist and instructor at OCAD University and the University of Toronto Scarborough.

 

Prefix Institute of Contemporary Art is a registered charitable organization that fosters the appreciation and understanding of contemporary photographic, media and digital arts through exhibitions, publications and related activities.

Series pass sales
Series passes are available for 42 CAD. Special series passes, discounted for students, seniors and Prefix Photo subscribers, are available for 28 CAD. Gold Series Passes, featuring front-of-the-line privileges, guaranteed seating until 7:20pm, and a charitable receipt for 100 CAD for income-tax purposes, are available for 180 CAD. Quantities are limited.

Orders may be placed by phone or e-mail; payments may be made by cash, cheque, Visa or MasterCard. Please note that tickets to single events are not available for advance purchase and are only sold at the door.
