The Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts at the University of Gothenburg invites applications to doctoral positions in the disciplines of Design, Crafts, and Artistic Practice.

Design
Department: HDK – Academy of Design and Crafts
The doctoral subject of Design shall develop the ability of doctoral students to form, explore, analyse and discuss design in social and cultural contexts, as well as to demonstrate critical and reflective capacity in relation to the research field.

Crafts
Department: HDK - Academy of Design and Crafts
The doctoral subject of Crafts supports investigations into the role of Crafts in society today. The aim of doctoral (third-cycle) education in Crafts is to educate with the support of methods relevant to the subject field both in practice and in theory, with a focus on developing the ability to autonomously and critically expand the base of knowledge in the subject.

HDK – Academy of Design and Crafts conducts research and delivers education related to design, crafts and educational science. Our teaching and research is based on an artistic foundation. The design and crafts subjects develop design and artistic expressions in dialogue with both societal and artistic contexts, alongside design and craft techniques, materials and methods determined by the practitioner.

Artistic Practice
Department: Valand Academy of Arts
Valand Academy of Arts seeks two doctoral students engaged with our research culture. Applicants should apply to conduct artistic research (practice-based, practice-led etc.) in one or more of the following research themes.

Intersectional Practices: includes work on queer, feminist and decolonial politics and culture, questions of care and social justice.

Political imaginaries and structures: includes work on artist-led culture, pedagogical transformations, curating, the curatorial, publishing and publicness, forms of activism, critical intervention and archival practice.

Experimental Materialisms: includes work on matter, language, rhetoric, histories, narrativity and storytelling practices.

The environmental: includes connections with natural and social science, the humanities, sustainable development, debates on the anthropocene and post-humanism.

The doctoral research platform in artistic practice at Valand Academy of Arts is transdisciplinary and supervision is available from all units of expertise at Valand (Fine Art, Film, Photography, Literary Composition) as well as other areas of specialism within the university. The doctoral student is a member of one of the subject units and expected to actively participate and collaborate with the Bachelor (first cycle) and Master (second cycle) programmes, as well as between the subject units.
