The Advanced Course in Visual Arts (CSAV) is an intensive specialization course for young artists from all around the world. The Course directed by Annie Ratti since 1995 and curated by Roberto Pinto in collaboration with Anna Daneri, is conceived as a laboratory of artistic and theoretical experimentation led by important international artists.

Visiting Professor of the XII edition of the course is Marjetica Potrc, artist and architect born in Ljubljana, Slovenia, where she presently lives and works.

Her projects focus on the city and its extension, considering not only an architectonic or urbanistic point of view: the city developments – including aspects concerning energy resources, watering systems and urban agriculture – in her works are studied as social and cultural elements. Her urban projects also aim to mix experiences of different cultural and economic contexts, in order to stress the irreversibility of the globalization process, investigated in its various aspects.

Marjetica Potrc’s ability in creating interaction between different layers of social and urban research has been internationally recognized, and her works have been part of many group exhibitions around the world: at the Biennale in San Paolo, Brazil (1996), Skulpturprojecte in Münster, Germany (1997), Manifesta 3 in Ljubljana, Slovenia (2000) and at the Venice Biennale in 2003.

Among the institutions that hosted her solo exhibitions are the Guggenheim Museum, New York (2001), the Kuenstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin (2001) and the MIT List Visual Arts Centre in Cambridge, Massachusetts (2004). In 2000 Potrc won the prestigious Hugo Boss Prize and since 2005 her work Genesis is on permanent display at the Nobel Peace Centre in Oslo.

The Course takes place in Como from July 3rd to 22nd, 2006; 20 young international artists, selected among the numerous applications by a scientific committee, will be involved in a daily workshop activity with Marjetica Potrc. The participants will also take part in in-depth theoretical studies with the curators, and follow seminars held by distinguished experts of the international art scene.

The title of the workshop is Fragmented City. Each week a different theme will be investigated: Territories the first week, Architectures the second, and Natural Resources the third. The focus will be on the European area, and specifically on the western Balkan regions, seen as an example of territorial and architectonic fragmentation. The workshop will include research and comparative studies, leading to projects concerning Como and the cities of origin of the students.

This year the visiting professor will open the personal exhibition during the workshop. The student’s end of course exhibition presenting the works created during the CSAV , will be held in September in Milan. Both the exhibitions will be documented with a bilingual catalogue.

To stress the interdisciplinary and experimental nature of the course, every year the CSAV will be dedicated to a different discipline. The artists activity will be sided by two young researchers, as well as two young curators that will follow the edition of the catalogue.

During the Advanced Course in Visual Arts Cesare Pietroiusti will curate a series of lectures and work presentations of the participants, open to the public.

The Course is free, residence is at the student’s expense.

The visiting professors of the past editions were: Joseph Kosuth (1995), John Armleder (1996), Allan Kaprow (1997), Hamish Fulton (1998), Haim Steinbach (1999), Ilya Kabakov (2000), Marina Abramovic (2001), Giulio Paolini (2002), Richard Nonas (2003), Jimmie Durham (2004), Alfredo Jaar (2005).
