Studium Generale

Matrix City investigates how an urban environment influences the development of music and visual culture. It reveals not only the occasionally audacious ideas concerning our future cities but also the dilemmas vis-à-vis participating in the urban “revolution” and the potential alternative of virtual environments. The programme consists of highlights of the Impakt Festival, a number of student projects and work by local artists from the cities of Zwolle, Enschede and Arnhem. The video screenings are accompanied by theory-based introductions by the Impakt curators along with talks and performances by the participating artists.

Scheduled video works include:
Brilliant City by D-Fuse (2004, United Kingdom/China) 14′ 30”
As shot from the 34th floor of a building in Shanghai, we observe the everyday events of this city: a panorama of a rapidly changing metropolis.

Ottica Zero by Maja Borg (2007, United Kingdom) 13′ 00”
An old-fashioned, futuristic film about the role of technology and a utopian society.

Metropolis by Rob Carter (2008, United States) 9′ 33”
This stop-motion, pop-up animation shows the speeded-up future of urban growth in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Current programme updates for each city are included on http://www.artez.nl/dacapo.
