This residency will be a six-week experiment in collaboration, mutual education, and communal living. It draws on a range of 20th-century historical models within the fields of visual art, participatory theatre, alternative education, and the commune movement. These models aimed to introduce ‘creativity’ into everyday life and emphasized ‘playfulness’ as a tool that would emancipate the individual from the apparently ‘inauthentic’ social relations produced by normative institutional frameworks—including the family, the education system, and the workplace. In keeping with the ethos of mutual education, there is no expectation of professionalism, but rather the aim will be to try out methods and share ideas, skills, knowledge and enthusiasms as part of an experimental workshop process.

Banff Research in Culture 2013

Banff Research in Culture (BRiC) 2013 is organized in partnership with the Liverpool Biennial. For the city of Liverpool, which has undergone a significant period of de-industrialization and de-population, the docks that line its waterfront constitute a reminder of a more prosperous moment in its development. They are also a site of potential urban re-development and re-imagining, with all the promise and hazards that such gentrification and rebuilding bring with them. BRiC 2013 seeks to bring together critical thinkers intent on exploring the politics played out on physical and metaphoric docks, as well as practices of docking in art, culture, design, critical theory, cultural studies, and urban development. The liminal spaces to which docks point include legal, national, physical and conceptual borders of all kinds—spaces and places where power is exerted over identities and collectivities, and so, too, sites where power is actively challenged with the aim of enabling new possibilities for a new century.
Another World in the Studio

I want to spend time in my studio in one of the most beautiful places in the world.
Sarah Anne Johnson invites artists to the Banff Centre to make, create and debate with a group of like-minded individuals in the stunning location of the Canadian Rockies. Open to all artistic disciplines, participants will be encouraged to spend time in the studio and take advantage of the Visual Arts department’s excellent facilities in photography, sculpture, printmaking, papermaking, ceramics, textiles, painting and drawing, sound and video.
Another World in the Studio is without an overarching theme or time-consuming program. Instead it offers generous studio time to make art, experiment with ideas and media, read books and articles, or write. There will be two intensive group critique sessions as well as individual studio visits with Sarah Anne Johnson and invited guests.

Banff Artist in Residence (BAIR) Programs
Ongoing opportunities
Banff Artist in Residence programs offer independent periods of study where artists, curators, and other arts professionals are free to experiment and explore. Participants are provided with an individual studio accessible 24 hours a day, as well as use of Visual Arts facilities including printmaking, papermaking, ceramics, sculpture, and photography. BAIR offers short and long-term opportunities to work at a remove from the constraints of everyday life.
