The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, with appointment beginning summer of 2013.
The Director of the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum is responsible for the overall direction of the museum and its programs that serve as a memorial to social reformer Jane Addams, the first American woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, and her colleagues whose work changed the lives of their immigrant neighbors as well as national and international public policy. The Director will lead and oversee the future growth of this internationally known museum that represents Jane Addams’s and the Hull-House settlement’s commitments to social change, public service and education. The Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, part of the College of Architecture and the Arts at the University of Illinois at Chicago, is a historic site that continues to welcome some of the world’s most important thinkers, artists and activists. The director should embrace the UIC Social Justice Initiative to “create knowledge that transforms our views of the world and, through sharing and application, transforms the world.”
The Director has primary responsibility for the development of exhibitions and programs, the museum’s care and operation, the interpretation of the buildings and site, the collections and historical legacy, the preservation and improvement of the two buildings that make up the Hull-House (one a National Landmark and the other a Chicago Landmark), and the future expansion of the Museum. The Director communicates the significance of Jane Addams and her associates to the campus community, the neighborhood, the residents of the city of Chicago, and national and international publics. The Director is responsible for the care of artifacts, photographs, documents, and oral histories that comprise the Jane Addams Memorial Collection and other material relating to Jane Addams, the Hull-House, and the Settlement House Movement. Finally, s/he will hire, train, and supervise the staff and volunteers who contribute to the efficient operation and future growth of the museum, and coordinate programs with other institutions.
The Director reports to the Dean of the College of Architecture and the Arts and operates with help and advice from an internal and an external advisory committee. The Director collaborates with College units and the wider University community to develop meaningful educational opportunities and public programs with the social sciences, art and art history, architecture, design, urban planning and health sciences. S/he will be expected to engage with faculty and students in interdisciplinary research and teaching activities that relate to the Museum and/or the legacy of Jane Addams. S/he will be responsible to engage multiple, diverse publics as s/he develops exhibitions and public programs. S/he will expand connections with community groups and local, national and international organizations.S/he will be responsible for the operating budget of the Museum and will be expected to attract private, public, and foundation support to bring the museum to new levels of public service, research, and instruction.
Qualifications: A minimum of a master’s degree in an appropriate field within the arts, history or a field related to the Hull-House legacy, and at least five years’ experience in management, education, resource and program development in a museum or related organization required. Record of academic achievement and success in securing grants and fundraising strongly preferred. Potential for concurrent faculty appointment in an appropriate academic department.
