Drawing is a universal act that deepens our sense of community and establishes commonalities across cultures. It transcends time, geography, and disciplines, and encompasses our earliest forms of expression from handwriting to drawn maps to doodles. Drawing Democracies, a singular, daylong event at Pratt Institute, will provide the public with the opportunity to engage in different drawing-related activities on and around the Institute’s 25-acre Brooklyn campus at no cost (October 19, see details below). Participants of all skill levels are invited to join in and celebrate drawing through interactive conversations, figure-drawing sessions, and more (drawing materials and tools are available at the event).

Highlights include:

– Drawing Conversations (rapid one on one): Participants can sit down for two-minute rotating conversations with artists, curators, students, and educators to explore the significance of drawing. Co-presented by The Drawing Center.

– Dance Theater of Harlem Drawing: Ballet dancers from the esteemed company will pose for outdoor figure-drawing sessions.

– Fashion Model Drawing: Models wearing Pratt fashion-student designs will participate in indoor figure-drawing sessions.

– Open Studios: More than 100 fine-arts and digital-arts students will open their studios to the community to showcase new works in a variety of media.

– Film Screenings:Art21 will present William Kentridge film screenings; drawing-themed videos by film/video students will be projected outdoors onto Pratt’s ARC Building.

– Family Art Activities: Kids of all ages are invited to participate in site-specific installation, stop-motion animation, and screen-printing projects.

The full schedule is available for viewing on the Drawing Democracies website; more information will be available on-site at Pratt’s campus quad. RSVP is recommended for Drawing Conversations (rapid one on one) at [email protected] or [email protected].
