Founded in 1925, Emily Carr University of Art + Design is a centre for innovation in art and design research and education, and is one of four Canadian institutions dedicated to the education of artists, designers, and media practitioners. Over the past decade, Emily Carr has grown its undergraduate and graduate degree programs, and has developed research facilities across a broad range of fields, including Stereoscopic/3-D Film, Digital and Social Media, Wearable Computing, Health Design, Environmental and Social Sustainability, and Materials and Fabrication Research. This spring, the University announced plans for the construction of a new campus on the Great Northern Way site in Vancouver. The new Emily Carr campus, set to be completed in 2016, will further support our vision of a multidisciplinary research and teaching environment where students, faculty, community members and industry partners work within a project-based curriculum that addresses the changing landscape of education, art-making and the cultural and creative industries.

In this context, Emily Carr University is inviting applications for a Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in the area of Indigenous Studies/Social and Cultural Practice. The values of citizenship and community are central to our mission at Emily Carr.  We seek to promote critical cultural awareness, engagement with our wider communities, social and environmental sustainability, and social justice as core elements of our teaching and research practice. We are particularly interested in how valuing and respecting Indigenous perspectives and methodologies can translate into innovative pedagogy across our curriculum and programs. The ideal candidate for this position will hold a PhD in Indigenous Studies or a related field within art, media, design and/or cultural and critical studies. They will value a transdisciplinary approach to indigenous studies and pedagogy, and will be fluent in both academic discourse and studio practice, and capable of balancing conceptual, aesthetic, and research demands. Preference will be given to qualified applicants of indigenous ancestry.

Consistent with the criteria for Tier 2 Canada Research Chairs, successful candidates for this position will be exceptional emerging scholars and practitioners with demonstrated potential for becoming national and world leaders in their area(s) of research. Candidates should have a strong interest in working in a multi-disciplinary art and design environment, experience with industry/community-engaged research practice, and demonstrated excellence in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Candidates should hold a PhD in their area of expertise, and should have obtained their degree in the last 10 years.

The CRC appointment is tenure-track and will be for a five-year term, with a possibility of an extension of five years.

Applicants should send a curriculum vitae, a cover letter expressing your interest in the position and providing a brief overview of your (three–five-year) research plan, digital files or website information that show examples of your current art or design practice (if applicable), evidence of teaching effectiveness, and the names and contact information of three references.

Please send applications (quoting Competition #F011-2013) to [email protected]
