Still Alive
Led by 2013 Sobey Art Award finalist Mark Clintberg, Still Alive is a residency that invites diverse responses and engagements with the genre of still life. Participants may engage with the genre’s usual subject matter (dead things, edible things, floral, feathered, and furred things, manufactured, and commoditized things) or its themes (wealth, abundance, property, mortality, vanity, pleasure, fetishes, and frivolity), but do not necessarily need to make images or arrangements of objects that would typically be defined as still life.

Still Alive will be guided by past and present theories and practices of still life, but not restricted by them, and is open to artists working in all mediums beyond the traditional.

Summer Studio
Seek retreat from the everyday and engage in an international community of artists from all disciplines for an intense period of creativity that defines summer at The Banff Centre. Summer Studio is a self-directed program in visual arts offering the space, time, and inspiration in which to make new work.

Demonstrations in visual art production techniques will be offered, and our knowledgeable staff will be on hand to offer support and provide access to our world-class facilities. Take advantage of attending public talks by faculty and artists from around the world who join us in the summer months, or retreat with dedicated time to work in your studio.

Residencies during this period are flexible, and can vary between two to six weeks.

Kiln Raising
Apply by: February 3
Program dates: May 30–June 24
This residency will bring together emerging and established ceramic artists to create new work and explore kiln construction. Participating artists will delve into wood kiln history, theory, principles of design, construction, and firing process with the goal of understanding and maximizing the nuances of wood firing and its relationship to form and surface.

Discussions and workshops addressing clay-body formulation, wheel and hand building processes, loading and firing strategies for atmospheric kilns, are also part of this residency. As well, artists will have time to explore independent projects and push their work in new creative directions through studio visits with faculty mentors and feedback from peers.
