For the past few years, Abraham Cruzvillegas has created a body of research under the title autoconstrucción or “self-construction,” which involves simultaneous “autodestrucción,” “reconstrucción” and “autoconfusión.” Inspired by the harsh landscape and living conditions in urban areas in Mexico City where houses have been built on inhospitable land in ad hoc improvisations according to personal needs and economic resources, Cruzvillegas assembles sculptures and installations from found objects and disparate materials. His work raises questions related to the aesthetic and social dimensions of objects, pedagogical processes, and social relationships.
In 2015, he was commissioned for a site-specific commission at Tate Turbine Hall, for which his sculpture Empty Lot will be on exhibit until April 3, 2016. His work has been included in biennials such as the Nicaragua Biennial (2016); Sharjah Biennial 12, United Arab Emirates (2015); dOCUMENTA 13, Kassel, Germany (2012); 12th Istanbul Biennial, Turkey (2011); 6th Biennial Media City Seoul, South Korea (2010); 10th Bienal de la Habana, Cuba (2009); the 50th Venice Biennale, Italy (2003), among others.
Abraham Cruzvillegas is a guest artist of the Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Visiting Artists and Critics program. The program invites key figures to Hunter College to address topics in art and scholarship through talks with students and the New York community. In addition to this forum, Cisneros Visiting Artists and Critics conduct studio visits and seminar discussions with Hunter M.F.A. and M.A. students during their residency.
