New program connects design to the hand-made
Oregon College of Art and Craft and Pacific Northwest College of Art are now accepting applications for the new joint MFA in Applied Craft and Design.
A 60-credit, two-year program that merges the highest level of craft with design practice and entrepreneurial strategies, the joint MFA is a unique graduate program that fuses tradition, innovation, and practice with design theory and hands-on making.
The MFA in Applied Craft and Design challenges students to seek the full strength of their ideas and to develop the tools to be truly innovative, engaging hands-on making while actively pursuing solutions to contemporary challenges. This joint MFA allows students to simultaneously explore craft and design using the combined resources of both OCAC and PNCA.
Connecting the processes and practices of craft and design, social and environmental responsibility are vital components of this program—students are challenged to pursue concepts and solutions that address complex global issues.
Program highlights include:
• Credit-bearing internships and/or global involvement that encourage interdisciplinary, experiential learning and cultural exchange.
• A mentor-based experience that encourages independent inquiry.
• A strong program of visiting artists drawn from PNCA’s Ford Institute for Visual Education and OCAC’s Artists in Residence program.
The MFA in Applied Craft and Design appeals to students with a strong background as makers, interested in expanding the scope of their work and their access to the design profession.
Upon completion of the degree, graduates are prepared for opportunities in higher education, entrepreneurial ventures, design careers, artistic practices, and other occupations that embrace creative problem solving.
