French President Emmanuel Macron Launches Artist Residency Reforms

PARIS, FRANCE—The French president, Emmanuel Macron, has charged Thierry Tuot, a senior civil servant, with reaccessing the artistic residencies funded by the state. According to Le Monde, France currently spends more than $8 million each year on around 500 residencies and arts programs in the fields of visual and performance arts. Macron’s aim is to reinforce France’s capacity to attract and develop artistic talent.

Macron has asked Tuot to identify the strengthens and weaknesses of the current initiatives, and to make recommendations on the “reorientation, the creation, or the withdrawal of residency programs.” Tuot must also reevaluate the program at the French Academy at Villa Medici, Rome, where he is president of the administrative council.
