Judy Chicago To Deliver SAIC Commencement Address

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS—Artist Judy Chicago will deliver the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s commencement address, May 14, 2018. Chicago will also receive an honorary doctorate. Artists and SAIC alumni Teresa Burga and Rashid Johnson and architect Stanley Tigerman will also be awarded honorary doctorates. Nine hundred students across the school’s undergraduate, graduate, and post-baccalaureate division will also receive degrees.

“The School of the Art Institute of Chicago is honored to welcome Judy Chicago, Stanley Tigerman, Rashid Johnson, and Teresa Burga into the class of 2018,” SAIC president Elissa Tenny said. “Through their work and scholarship, these citizen artists address contemporary issues and exemplify the values that make SAIC a school of art and design that is distinct from any other.”

Judy Chicago is a feminist artist, author, educator and humanist whose work argues for a increased visibility of female artists and women’s right to freedom of expression. As an instructor at Fresno State College and the California Institute of the Arts in the 1970s, Chicago administered the Feminist Art Program, with Joyce Aiken and Miriam Schapiro, respectively. Chicago’s monumental work The Dinner Partyis on permanent view at the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum.

Previous SAIC commencement speakers and honorary doctorate recipients include Kerry James Marshall, Tania Bruguera, Albert Oehlen, and Theaster Gates.
