Kalostra

Kalostra, an initiative of Gipuzkoa's Provincial Council, is an experimental school for artists to learn with artists; it will work by looking inwards, will devote time and space to the practice of art, in the belief that the intrinsic value of art lies in the very practice of it and not in audiences or money. It is underpinned by a poetic attitude rather than an aesthetic one, and it is keen to strengthen the intergenerational relationship, the context itself, the transmission and the collective learning process through a shared experience.  To achieve this, the artists who will be forming the teaching staff will undertake to give the school its shape and will be the very backbone of the school. Nevertheless, it is not a top-down school, a place to enable those who know to teach those who do not. In actual fact, what interests us the most is what we do not know. We want it to emerge through direct contact and ongoing dialogue, so that we can all learn together. Nowadays, the workshop has become a convention, something totally commonplace, and it has exhausted itself. So what we are aiming to do with this school is to go beyond that model. The collective nature of education will be reinforced, and a group of artists will form the teaching staff to think through and define the actual model of the school. This is its main feature, and is the basis of its identity. The courses will last six months. Each course is divided into two terms. The group of six–eight artists who will be giving the lessons in each of these courses will make up the teaching staff, which will decide the shape and nature of the lessons in each period.
