Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg (HFBK)

The Hochschule für bildende Künste (HFBK) is Hamburg’s University of Fine Arts. With its wide range of subjects, the HFBK offers students the opportunity to study for interdisciplinary arts practice based academic qualifications. Students work in studios and are encouraged to further their arts practice and theoretical understanding through seminars and individual and group tutorials. The university’s teaching staff comprise highly renowned artists and lecturers of art theory. The aim is to enable students to develop new perspectives and find innovative solutions in all artistic disciplines. The emphasis is on self-directed learning. Students follow their own interests and further their arts practice through project based and experiential research. 

The HFBK offers undergraduate, Masters and PhD study programs in the following subjects: Sculpture, Stage Design, Design, Film, Graphic Art/ Typography/ Photography, Painting/ Drawing, Theory and History, and Time-based Media. Theory- based study programs such as cultural theory, aesthetics, art-historical and media-specific studies supplement arts practice based courses but can also lead to stand-alone academic qualifications. A wide range of practical workshops taught by experienced technicians provide students with opportunities to gain knowledge about materials and acquire technical skills, which underpin their arts practice.
