Carolina Caycedo: A Gente Rio

Recasting Water Worlds

Carolina Caycedo’s documentary A Gente Rio (“We River”) speaks of the river as a collective body that exceeds its course. In this film, she interviews members from indigenous communities that live on the Xingu River, where the Belo Monte Dam is being built; near the Itaipu Dam, the second-largest hydroelectric plant in the world; around the Vale do Ribeira, where indigenous caiçara and quilombola communities are rising against the construction of a dam; and near the former Bento Rodrigues Dam, which collapsed in 2015, leading to the Mariana disaster. These communities are fiercely resisting land expropriation and state violence by forming coalitions and processing collective trauma.
