Marine Hugonnier: Apicula Enigma

From Imaging Dissent: Towards Becoming a Common Subject

This film by Marine Hugonnier questions the anthropocentric representations of nature created by the naturalist gaze. Apicula Enigma (which translates to “the riddle of the bee”) reveals the kaleidoscope of different perceptive regimes that coexist in the world, while questioning the human visual conventions representing them.

What nonhuman languages and communities coexist? Can human interaction with nature develop on principles of solidarity and reciprocity rather than extraction and domination? At the end of this fragment a female voice whispers, “Nature doesn’t tell stories,” a prompt for viewers to reconsider their distance from nonhuman forms of life.
