Brett Scott: The War on Cash

In his talk at The Conference 2019, finance activist and author Brett Scott challenges the standard narrative that cashlessness is an organic desire of the consumer when in actuality it comes from large-scale institutions like banks, payment-processing companies, and governments that have been invested in eroding the cash system for decades. Scott argues that we should maintain diversity in payment systems. The cash system ought to be protected as a public utility because, unlike digital payments, cash is democratic and inclusive.
