Mothers of Invention: The White Man Stole the Weather

From Watershed Ways

Yvette Abrahams—climate-justice activist, feminist, scholar, and more—dives into her work in the anti-apartheid divestment movement in this episode of Mothers of Invention, a podcast by former Irish president Mary Robinson and comedian Maeve Higgins. In particular, Abrahams discusses her post-apartheid collaborations with local women farmers who identified early on that “The white man stole the weather.”1 Tracing a history of struggle with oppressive apparatuses that sought to extract wealth and erase ancestral knowledges of ecology, Abrahams details the “cross sectoral alliances” necessary to bring down those structures and connects them with the intersectional methodologies that can create an equitable, low-carbon society.
