By way of a thorough recounting of the Dana Schutz controversy at the 2017 Whitney Biennial, Aruna D’Souza details an understanding of art institutions as harbingers of cultural valuation wherein value is produced elsewhere and reinforced by the institution rather than mirroring individual expression. Her lecture offers an opportunity to think through the ways we (and the institutions that we participate in or otherwise find ourselves entangled in through employment, brief engagements, programs, etc.) are at best implicated, and at worst complicit, in systemic oppression.
