Hito Steyerl: What is Contemporary?

In Search of a Recuperative Aesthetics

Hito Steyerl’s immersive video installation “Factory of the Sun” begins from a state of increasing surveillance and virtuality and asks what forms of collective resistance are still viable. The set of the installation is modeled after, and perhaps posed as a kind of “holodeck,” a device able to materialize different worlds. In this conversation, Steyerl and Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Los Angeles assistant curator Lanka Tattersall discuss the work in relation to problems of representation, protest movements, and the nature of time.
