Mason Leaver-Yap: Archaeology & Exorcisms: Moving Image and the Archive

From A tear forms along the seam

Presented in the frame of the conference entitled Archaeology & Exorcisms: Moving Image and the Archive, the former Director of LUX Scotland, Mason Leaver-Yap introduces the ongoing development of that initiative. They begin their presentation by immediately foregrounding the problem of discussing questions of archiving, collections and display in relation to an emerging organization that has no display space, has no collection and has no archive. Asserting that “distribution is all we do, and distribution puts these questions into circulation…”, the question of distribution at LUX Scotland for Leaver-Yap includes not only the circulation of work but also the distribution of knowledge through workshops and skillshares for artists. Not having a collection but instead having a collection to borrow from at LUX results in Leaver-Yap and their colleagues developing dialogues and identifying the urgencies for artists and audiences that arise in their specific national and regional context.
