Tenure-track Assistant Professors in Painting

The School of Art at Carnegie Mellon University is excited to announce two full-time tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor within the field of painting. The school is seeking dynamic and committed artists whose practices are grounded in painting; who are actively exhibiting nationally and/or internationally; and who demonstrate the capacity to teach specialized courses within their field while contributing to the school’s broader interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate curricula.

Special attention will be given to candidates who bring critical and technical knowledge into their studio practice as well as their pedagogy. Candidates with hybrid practices or additional expertise in the areas of drawing, printmaking, or photography are strongly encouraged to apply. All candidates are required to have an advanced degree or equivalent. Experience teaching at the college or university level is strongly preferred. We welcome applicants who will contribute to the cultural and intellectual breadth of our school, and we encourage applications from members of groups that have been marginalized in art and underrepresented in higher education.

Full-time tenure-track faculty are expected to be actively engaged with the school’s community, including taking part in the governance of the school, being involved in our pedagogical and curricular development, and contributing to our broader educational ambitions. In addition, the new hire will be responsible for teaching two classes per semester, maintaining an active studio practice, and advising graduate students. Teaching responsibilities may encompass foundational, intermediate, and advanced studio classes in painting and drawing; topical classes within the candidate’s field; capstone classes for seniors; and graduate-level critique classes for MFA students. A private studio will be provided with access to the school’s many physical, digital, and technology-based facilities.

The School of Art is one of five schools in the College of Fine Arts, along with the Schools of Architecture, Design, Drama, and Music. The School of Art offers individual studios for all juniors and seniors; 24-hour access to state-of-the-art facilities; and collaborative relationships with innovative learning environments, such as the Center for Arts in Society, the Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry, and IDeATe. The school’s unique pedagogy spans five areas: drawing, painting, print media, and photography; electronic and time-based media; sculpture installation and site-work; contextual practice; and critical studies. The MFA program is ranked by US News and World Report as number seven in the US and as number one in Time-Based and New Media.
