From Friday July 1 to Tuesday July 5 the KABK graduation show takes place. It will be opened by Ranti Tjan, the new director of the Royal Academy of Art (KABK). Tjan has been appointed director of the KABK as of June 1, 2022. “I experience a lot of energy within the academy. Students are enjoying themselves and teachers are willing to talk and further improve the academy,” Tjan says.

The art academy in The Hague is being transformed into an 8000 square-meter exhibition space for the graduation show. More than 240 art and design students set up their final projects within the academy. With these artworks, the bachelor and master graduates respond to themes that are current in society, such as artificial intelligence, identity and climate change. The graduation projects are on view during the final exhibition and presented on an online graduation catalogue.

In the run-up to the annual Graduation Show, Tjan has spent the past few days talking to various students about their graduation project. The graduates told Ranti about their thought process regarding their work, but also about what they have experienced and learned at KABK in the past years. “With my project I’m trying to relearn my culture, because I feel distant from my own Malaysian culture. I’m trying to find out what’s from my heart and what’s not,” Nurul Ain Binti Nor Halim, graduate BA Fine Arts, says. “This is the first time that I am working with young artists”, Tjan says. “I am not an artist myself, but I like talking with them about the why and how their work is perceived in the world.”

As a leader who is skilled in bringing people together, Tjan will give direction to the transition of the Royal Academy of Art. Under his leadership, the further development of the educational vision and programmes of KABK, the learning and working climate, and the focus on inclusiveness within the organisation, will continue.
