The Visual Arts Program in the School of the Arts at Columbia University seeks to fill the position of Assistant Professor (tenure-track faculty) effective July 1, 2022.

The Program seeks candidates whose work is deeply engaged in the discipline of painting and related media, and whose work is based in a creative and conceptual practice that evidences a deep understanding of and a strong engagement in the historical and current theoretical underpinnings of painting as an artistic medium. Participation in conversation around the future of the discipline, especially as it can be explored within a highly interdisciplinary program, is essential. Columbia University School of the Arts is committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion. We encourage applicants from historically underrepresented groups.

The successful candidate will have a vibrant studio practice, active professional career, and the ability to teach undergraduate and graduate students across disciplines and mediums. They will also be capable of service and leadership in the program, demonstrating the potential for vision and direction that would be appropriate to a director of undergraduate or graduate studies or a program chair for Visual Arts. (The successful candidates would serve rotating terms in one or more of these capacities in the future.)

The Visual Arts Program attracts artists working in all forms including painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, moving image, and new genres. The Program, in association with the Department of Music and the Computer Music Center, also offers an MFA in Sound Art.

Columbia University School of the Arts offers Masters of Fine Arts degrees in four disciplines: Film, Theatre, Visual Arts, and Writing, as well as a Masters of Arts and related undergraduate programs. Visit Columbia University’s open positions page to apply.
