Zoe Li, Comb Machine: The Regulation of Hair, 2020. Mixed media, various dimensions.

From large-scale installations and interactive objects to whimsical, sometimes gritty animations, MFA students in Digital Arts (STEM) create sophisticated work within the context of art and technology at Pratt Institute.

Students, faculty and alumni in this 60-credit-hour, two-year MFA program have been represented in major national and international galleries, museums, festivals and conferences, and they have received numerous awards, including Guggenheim Fellowships, New York Foundation for the Arts grants, Banff residencies, Academy Awards, Fulbright Awards, Aaron Siskind Fellowships, Emmys, Eyebeam Fellowships, New York State Council Grants, Adobe Guru awards and SIGGRAPH Awards. Pratt Institute Digital Arts animation program was ranked among the top in the nation by Animation Career Review.

Curriculum
Domestic and international artists come together to study within the concentrations of Interactive Arts and Animation and Motion Arts. MFA Interactive Arts students use a wide array of technology to challenge viewers and explore culture in projects that range from large-scale installations and interactive objects to AR/VR/XR, performance, and iOS applications situated within a fine-arts setting. Studio practice is essential. Interactive arts students are provided with collaborative and individual studio spaces to contemplate and create.

Digital Arts’ students become part of the thriving New York art scene, establishing a professional network and taking advantage of exhibition opportunities that exist nowhere else in the country. Graduates become leading contributors to the digital arts with a commitment to the cultural enrichment of their world.

MFA Animation and Motion Arts students use advanced software to create worlds in which distinctive characters tell fanciful stories. From storyboarding to post-production, finished works range from screen-based animation to time-based installations.

Working as independent filmmakers, MFA Animation and Motion Arts students utilize state of the art digital classrooms, green screen room, audio recording facility, render farm, stop-motion facility and Cintiqs to create individual animations.

Digital Arts MFA programs are augmented by internships, special topics courses, and lectures/critiques by visiting artists. Students create work with the guidance of a faculty of professional practicing artists, filmmakers and scholars who serve as models in the pursuit of artistic excellence.

In all concentrations, students develop skills in programming, critique and research within the context of critical new media theory. Throughout their studies, students work with the departments' internship coordinator to explore opportunities, for academic credit, at studios, galleries, arts institutions and production companies in the metropolitan New York area.

Located in Myrtle Hall, a bespoke art and technology facility on the Northern tip of Pratt Institute's 25 acre Brooklyn campus, students in the graduate Digital Arts program are fully immersed in the creation of artwork of the digital age.
