Radar is pleased to announce the EURO⁠—VISION platform launch as part of their Risk Related programme of commissions in collaboration with Arts Catalyst's Extractable Matters programme. EURO⁠—VISION is an art-led enquiry by the duo FRAUD (Audrey Samson & Francisco Gallardo) into the extractive gaze of European institutions and policies, which focuses on the inscriptive operations of resource management.

Initiated in 2018 in collaboration with scholar and media practitioner Btihaj Ajana as an investigation into the collusion between border securitisation and extraction, the project examines the many entangled modes of extraction that Europe enacts on third countries* with its Critical Raw Materials Initiative. The initiative defines strategies for accessing resources viewed as imperative to the EU’s subsistence, and as such, brings into focus the covalence among international relations, trade, economic policy and border security.

Intended as a growing resource and archive, the platform proposes paths of exploration through the various strands of research which stem from resources such as phosphate, fish(eries), sand and carbon. Challenging what is now considered a critical material with such categories helps to elucidate how these are managed as resources to be extracted, as well as how their plunder is mobilised and institutionalised. More importantly, this framework enables us to look beyond these practices to the possibility of thinking and doing otherwise.

A number of practitioners, economists, lawyers, activists, academics and journalists have participated in the making of EURO⁠—VISION. Their voices, insights and recommendations are included in various forms. Some of these are interviews available to download and read, others constitute the body of a series of podcasts. The platform also includes an expanding glossary and documentation of the extended research-led practice and exhibitions which have stemmed from these conversations.

*A third country is a country that is not a member of the European Union as well as a country or territory whose citizens do not enjoy the European Union right to free movement.

EURO—VISION podcast series
A series of podcasts that compile conversations with activists, economists, scholars, fisherpeople and artists, hosted by FRAUD, around the politics of extraction, migration and international agreements that are affecting communities and ecologies on a global scale and that perpetuate European colonial legacies. Forthcoming episodes will be launched in the autumn focusing on the relationship between migration and extraction.
