Each spring, the University of Chicago’s Department of Visual Arts, situated at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts, proudly celebrates the work of both undergraduate and graduate students with a series of thesis exhibitions hosted by Logan Center Exhibitions.
This year’s in-person viewings were open to University of Chicago affiliated faculty, staff, students, and to the public by reservation. Both exhibitions with artist details and installation views––including video walkthroughs–– are available online at the Logan Center Exhibitions’ website.

About our graduate program
The University of Chicago is proud to offer a Master of Fine Arts degree through the Department of Visual Arts. Our two-year MFA program is distinguished in its focused attention on understanding how the pluralism of today’s art making practices relate to one another, and also by its attention to creating conversations that bridge between DoVA and other areas of study at the University of Chicago.
Our MFA student body is comprised of artists working in sculpture, photography, painting, installation, performance, video and new media. Students are expected to work with all faculty, whose expertise cross a number of disciplines. We focus on working with our students to develop their work and enabling them to leave the University with the tools to support a lifetime of art making. As part of this process we encourage students to explore not only the artistic issues pertinent to their work, but also the theoretical, social and historical issues that intersect and bracket it.

About our undergraduate program
Visual Arts majors begin their investigation of the visual world through one of three 100-level courses that explore two and three dimensional phenomena or time-based media. In subsequent coursework students explore the expressive potential of various media, deciding upon one or a combination, which most fully supports the investigation of their ideas. In the spring of their junior year, Visual Arts majors take a required seminar which combines making images with written analyses of art objects in museums and galleries, and the reading of theoretical and historical material. At the end of the junior year, students can apply for the Studio Track. Studio Track students work with Visual Arts faculty throughout the senior year to mount an exhibition in the spring. Studio Track students are also eligible to apply for studio space in the Logan Center.
