Open position in Visual Arts—Photography

The Visual Arts program seeks to fill the position of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor, or Professor (tenure-track research faculty) effective July 1, 2021.

The program seeks candidates whose work is deeply engaged in the discipline of Photography and related media, and whose work is based in a creative and conceptual practice that evidences a deep understanding of and a strong engagement in the historical and current theoretical underpinnings of photography as an artistic medium. Applicants also should evidence a strong commitment to enhancing cross-disciplinary collaborations that will support the School’s goals with respect to diversity and inclusion.

The successful candidate will have a vibrant studio practice and the ability to teach undergraduate and graduate students across disciplines and mediums. Responsibilities include serving as concentration head in the area of photography as well as serving on rotation to fill one or more of the following leadership roles in the future: Director of Undergraduate or Graduate Studies, or Chair of the Visual Arts Program.

Minimum degree required: Master of Fine Arts or equivalent

Minimum qualifications: Candidates for Assistant Professor or Associate Professor of Visual Arts (tenure-track research position) must have demonstrated and show promise of the capacity for creative work and the accompanying pedagogy qualifying them for future nomination to tenure. Candidates with the rank of Associate Professor or Professor must have a record of excellence in teaching and be widely recognized for their distinction and professional accomplishment and demonstrate promise of attaining further distinction.

Graduate and Undergraduate teaching experience are preferred for all candidates.

The Visual Arts Program attracts artists working in all forms including moving image, new genres, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. The Program, in association with the Department of Music and the Computer Music Center, also offers an MFA in Sound Art. Columbia University School of the Arts offers Masters of Fine Arts degrees in four disciplines: Film, Theatre, Visual Arts, and Writing, as well as a Masters of Arts and related undergraduate programs.
