Rector position open

University of Kassel

Courtesy School of Fine Arts Kassel.

The University of Kassel is a modern and growing university with round about 25,000 students, and expertise in nature, technique, culture and society.

The following vacancy is to be filled:

33274—Rector (Temporary Professorship for a period of 4 years)
The rector is in charge of directing the School of Fine Arts (Kunsthochschule Kassel), with its approximately 1,000 students in the artistic and design programs of Fine Arts, Visual Communication, and Product Design, the Visual Arts Education as well as the BA/MA programs in Art History. In addition s/he is responsible for promoting the further development of the contents of the Art School and for actively administering how it is represented to the public at large.

The School of Fine Arts is part of the University of Kassel, but maintains a special autonomous status within the basic structures of the university, according to which its board and the rector bear sole responsibility for the duties covered in § 4 Sec. 2 HHG of an art school in a university context. The rector is selected by the board of the Art School and appointed as rector for a period of four years by the Hessian Ministry for Science and the Arts. In the case of external applications, the appointment is also made by the University according to § 61 Sec. 5 HHG for the duration of four years as a professorship with temporary civil servant status. Alternatively the engagement can also be arranged as an employment contract. The salary is oriented to W3 according to the Hessian Remuneration Act. Functional benefits will be granted. Application is open to anyone who meets the conditions of employment according to § 62 HHG, and whose artistic or scholarly achievements as well as personal performance and administrative experience in the field of culture indicate that s/he is capable of fulfilling the duties of the office. It is expected that the rector will continue to shape and develop the partial autonomy of the Art School. Applicants should have experience with initiating and developing processes that connect artistic and design-based works with a wider audience and that emphasize the Art School as a site of local activity in the city. In addition, experience with initiating and directing processes with a critical stance toward discrimination in the artistic/cultural/design-based field is preferred.

Application deadline: September 3, 2020
