Headlands Center for the Arts is a multidisciplinary, international arts center located in the Marin Headlands, part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Headlands’ Artists Programs provide opportunities for research, experimentation, professional development, and peer-to-peer exchange for artists working across disciplines at critical times in their careers. Unique among programs for artists, Headlands’ dynamic residency program provides meaningful resources—time, space, community, and financial support—to artists who are working on the cutting edge of their field to catalyze new modes of thought, work, and discourse. By bringing together artists from a wide range of disciplines, our programs emphasize a balance in developing an individual practice, a valuable exchange with other artists and visitors, and a meaningful engagement with place.

We are an equal opportunity institution that believes an equitable and diverse artist cohort is essential to our community. We welcome all applicants.

Artist in Residence
Artists and cultural workers have been particularly impacted by efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19. With this in mind, we have extended our application deadlines and further reduced our early application fee. Despite current disruptions, we fully intend our 2021 programs to take place as planned, and look forward to welcoming our 2021 cohort.

Application period: April 1–June 26, 2020
Early, reduced fee deadline: May 29, 2020
Program: March–November, 2021

Early application fee: 25 USD
General Application fee: 45 USD (application fees in place to offset the cost of application administration)

The Artist in Residence program awards fully sponsored residencies to approximately 50 local, national, and international artists each year. Artists in Residence are at all stages in their careers and work in a diverse array of fields and media, including: painting, photography, sculpture, installation, performance, dance, sound and music, film, video, new media, writing, architecture, interdisciplinary arts, and social practice. Residencies of four to ten weeks include private studio space, chef-prepared meals, comfortable housing, and travel and living stipends. Visit headlands.org for information on discipline-specific awards for Artists in Residence.
