The Department of Art at Vanderbilt University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in ceramics beginning August 16, 2020. We are looking for candidates who understand the rich cultural history of ceramics and whose work considers an expansive approach to the medium. We welcome artists whose interdisciplinary practice to working with clay is actively in conversation with other media such as sound, video, photography, sculpture, installation, etc. Ideal candidates will challenge traditional assumptions of ceramics as a medium and field while exhibiting their mastery of the skills and techniques necessary to probe its materiality. Candidates should be familiar with contemporary issues and cultural theories stemming from the medium in the context of history, environment, culture, and/or personal identity. We are looking for candidates who show potential for exceptional research, demonstrate excellence in teaching, a willingness to develop courses using our department’s state-of-the-art technology platforms, and have active exhibition records.

Qualifications
The Department of Art is committed to building an intellectually vibrant, culturally inclusive, and academically diverse community of exceptional faculty. The teaching load is two courses each semester and salary and benefits are highly competitive. Applicants must have an MFA or equivalent terminal degree in hand by the start of the Fall 2020 semester.

To apply, please submit a cover letter, portfolio of creative work and separate image list, curriculum vitae, artist statement, teaching statement, and teaching evaluations (if applicable). We will ask for three letters of recommendation electronically via Interfolio in phase two of the search process. Applications are due December 31, 2019.

Portfolio of creative work:
PDF, max. size 10MB. Creative work should be uploaded either entirely in PDF form, or via embedded URLs in a PDF. The portfolio can be up to 20 pages, each page containing one work with images, video stills, installation shots, etc. For each work/page, please include name, title, date, duration, size, media and links (when applicable.). For video, sound, moving image, installation or performance documentation, please include links to Vimeo excerpts no longer than 5 minutes in length.
