Application deadlines:
Round one: send applications before February 12, 2019
Round two: send applications before April 1, 2019 (at the latest May 01, 2019).
Round three: send applications before June 1, 2019 (at the latest June 26, 2019) (only for EU-students)
Places are given on a rolling basis and therefore early submissions are encouraged.

The Frank Mohr Institute houses the international Master of Arts in Fine Art and Design of the Minerva Art Academy, with two master’s degree programmes: Painting and MADtech—Media, Art, Design & Technology. The institute is named after Frank Mohr (1931–98), a cultural advisor to the city and province of Groningen. He was a fervent advocate of independence and innovation in art education in the Northern Netherlands.

Within the overarching community of Minerva Art Academy, there are various innovative workshops and facilities for theatre, plaster and ceramics, photography, digital media, plastics, wood, metal, graphics, drawing and painting, unstable media and electronics, as well as the Minerva shop and canteen. Platform Minerva provides a public platform for art, design, performing arts and research presentations. It offers exhibition and project rooms where students and teachers can experiment with scale and site, and spaces for collaboration and the documentation of works.

Profile
The programmes Painting and MADtech each provide their own context for artistic research: the contemporary field of, debate about and traditions concerning painting and the technologically mediated relationship of humans with society. These contexts, through their specific and sometimes oppositional character create a tension within which different positions in relation to contemporary art and new practices can be explored. Participating artists, designers and performers develop their own artistic vision through an intense working period in which personal investigations are backed up with dialogue and cooperation.

Together the programmes provide a context for the artistic research by placing it under the larger umbrella of exploring the technologically mediated relationship with society. We live in a time where technological developments play a major role in social change. Conversely, that technological drive gets its impulse from complex cultural, social, environmental and economic factors.

Working for two years within a community consisting of artists, designers and performers from a range of countries all over the world, and at the same time being located in a relatively peripheral area of the Netherlands provides the participants of the programme in Groningen with a unique situation. A constant awareness of global connections and developments, an intense intercultural exchange, embedded in an environment that invites and supports concentration and focus, form a special mixture for intense studying.

By taking these positions, the master students in both programmes acquire a good view of the own artistic identity and motivations. This makes it possible to work on personal and professional development, act in public and find an audience for the research and work. It is both about taking responsibility for the own practice, identifying and creating opportunities and alliances, as about operating from a free and autonomous position.
