Novia University of Applied Sciences acts along the Swedish-speaking parts of the Finnish coastline. With over 4000 students and a staff of about 300, Novia is the largest Swedish-speaking university of applied sciences in Finland. High-class and state-of-the-art degree programs provide students with a proper platform for their future careers. Among a vide range of Bachelor programs Novia UAS also offers some master´s degree studies in English.

In January 2019 the University will be accepting applications for our Master of Culture and Arts program. The program focus on the individual student’s professional artwork and how it relates and interacts with the world today. The program is encouraging students to pose necessary critical questions and reflect on all types of structures that influences and affect art and its realm.

The program consists of 60 ECTS credits and runs from September 2019 to December 2020. The program is the first low-residency program in the Nordic region and is unique in its approach. The success of the studies rely to a high degree on the student’s ability to work individually on assignments and essays that seek to challenge and develop the student’s work processes. The program consists of eight weeks of on-location studies, with intense periods of self-directed long distance studies in between. The program has an international profile and will feature experts from various fields within the art world. Two of the modules will be held in Campus Allegro Jakobstad, Finland (10–14 days/module). Four of the modules of on-location studies will consist of trips (5–8 days) to various centers in the art world. This as a way to encourage reflection on geography and movement. Students develop a critical practice through workshops, seminars taught by curators, critics and artists from an international arena, and from the program’s emphasis on “crits” where the students artworks are evaluated in a group setting.

This MA-program is free of charge for EU citizens. For students from non-EU countries there is a tuition fee. Read more about the tuition fees at our webpage. The travel expenses are to some extent covered by the University. Depending on where the students travel from, they might need to pay for parts of their tickets (the budget is calculated based on travel costs from Finland to the destinations mentioned below).

During the excursions students visit major contemporary art venues and meet up with their representatives including; the Istanbul Biennial; the March Meeting in Sharjah; Art Dubai art fair; museums and other exhibition venues, art academies and galleries which will provide a backdrop to discussions and primary experiences of contexts, spaces and different ways of mediating art. The studies culminate in examinations of the students essays and work. As the program is developed in both general terms, and through the individual needs of every student, the applicant is encouraged to have a general idea about personal goals with their education in their applications.

Admission January 9–23 2019 (3pm local Finnish time) via studyinfo.fi.

The application consists of three parts (please visit www.eitama.com for further instructions): (1) An electronic application. (2) A preliminary assignment. (3) An entrance exam.
