Are you interested in exploring the boundaries of technology, programming platforms, online/offline networks, and user experiences? (e.g. webware, hardware, software, internet, IPFS, darknet, peer 2 peer, blockchain, bot networks) Are you thinking through making? Are you looking for new challenges and cross-disciplinary collaboration? Submit a workshop proposal for the 4th edition of the Hackers & Designers Summer Academy, HDSA2018!

In the summer of 2018 Hackers & Designers brings together an international group of ambitious hackers/designers/makers/artists to learn by creating. During the 10-day Summer Academy tutors and mentors become participants, participants become workshop leaders—everyone will be taken on the collective venture of shared responsibility, bringing in one’s own expertise, urgencies and experience. The program concludes with a public presentation in which the participants will be able to show the results created during the Summer Academy.

Rethinking truth
In recent years our use and understanding of notions such as truth and reality have been heavily challenged. “White Lies,” “Fake News” and “Alternative Facts” are buzzwords that illustrate how truth might have become obsolete, and needs to be reconsidered. The notion of truth must be questioned as much within discourses of journalism as within the digital humanities, computer science, engineering, art and design practices. What are the technologies we are building, using and updating, and therefore constantly reaffirming—capable of? Do we really know? Do we need to know? By calling to Fake it! Fake them! Fake you! Fake us!..., the 4th edition of the Summer Academy, H&D promotes to take things into our own hands.

The workshops will function as satellites reaching a wider audience posing questions such as: Who owns information? Who directs data flows and who enables or limits access to information? Can we (re)build independent environments that shape our future practices? Shared moments of learning will invoke participants to discuss and create projects about topics related to information politics, distributed networks and algorithmic publishing. Investigating decentralized models for developing technology such as flat hierarchy wiki’s, IPFS, non-standard communication protocols and information networks such as the darknet, and bot networks, the summer academy participants will be stimulated to practice decentralized and self-determined organizational structures and publishing methods.

BYOW (Bring Your Own Workshop)
This year’s edition of the Summer Academy focuses on self-organisation and self-initiation, while promoting ‘hands-on learning’ to enable critical design and developer’s practices.
