From February 8 to 11, 2018, Städelschule Frankfurt will host its annual Rundgang, the student exhibition during which the art school opens its doors to the public. In the course of four days, students from the classes of internationally acclaimed faculty members such as Monika Baer, Johan Bettum, Peter Fischli, Douglas Gordon, Judith Hopf, Tobias Rehberger, Willem de Rooij, Amy Sillman, Theodore Spyropoulos, and Haegue Yang will exhibit their practices and current interests. Works will be shown on the two main campuses in Dürerstrasse 10 and Daimlerstrasse 32, Frankfurt; students of the Curatorial Studies program will conduct a series of talks in the school’s lecture hall; film- and video-work will be shown in the Deutsches Filmmuseum; and the students of the Architecture Class will present recent projects in their building in Dürerstrasse 24.

Founded in 1817, the Städelschule figures amongst the most influential art academies in the world and its faculty, including also Daniel Birnbaum (Philosophy), Isabelle Graw (Art Theory), and Philippe Pirotte (Art History), attracts a student body with over 70 percent of students from abroad. Furthermore, guest professors, external lecturers, and visiting tutors support and continuously develop a diverse range of teaching formats. Visiting faculty in 2017/18 includes guest professors Gerry Bibby, Bonaventure Ndikung, Laure Prouvost, Mark von Schlegell. Lecturers this semester were amongst others Eric Baudelaire, Abraham Cruzvillegas, Moyra Davey, Elena Filipovic, Anne-Mie van Kerckhoven, Allison Katz, Pablo Larios and John Smith. For the Architecture Class, guest professors Beatriz Colomina, Peter Trummer and Mark Wigley have taught in the various specializations and conducted seminars.

An important feature of the Städelschule is the Kunsthalle Portikus. Ever since its foundation in 1987, Portikus has been dedicated to exhibit, publish and discuss young and emerging as well as established artists. The Städelschule, Portikus and its director, Philippe Pirotte are honoured to present Christina Lehnert as the new curator of Portikus, succeeding Fabian Schöneich. On Friday, February 9, Portikus will open a site-specific exhibition by American artist Candice Lin. A Hard White Body, a Soft White Worm will be Lin’s first institutional solo-exhibition in Germany. In this show, the artist weaves together the stories of James Baldwin, Jeanne Baret, and Maria Sibylla Merian. While separated through time, geography and dividing lines of race, class and gender, all three characters negotiated complex intersectional power relations. In a room-spanning installation at Portikus, their trajectories are interwoven with those of porcelain, plants, and insects.
