As a leading graduate program of visual art in the United States, the Yale School of Art plays a vital role in fostering professional artists and artist educators within the field of contemporary art production and education while addressing art as an essential part of the cognitive, critical, and inquisitive life of the University. The Yale School of Art is primarily an MFA graduate program that nurtures committed studio based practice through ongoing intensive critique. The program is divided into four areas of study—Graphic Design, Painting/Printmaking, Photography and Sculpture.
The Yale School of Art seeks an Associate Dean and Professor in the Practice, non-tenure track, starting July 1, 2018. The initial appointment will be up to 5 years. The Associate Dean serves as a core member of the Yale School of Art leadership team to provide support in carrying out the Dean’s vision by directing and coordinating the School’s initiatives and policies. The Associate Dean works closely with the Dean in strategic planning to develop new programs, refresh curriculum, and assist in shepherding those initiatives through the appropriate approval process.
The Associate Dean conveys the Dean’s vision for the school across its constituents. The successful candidate will liaise between the Dean, the program directors, other members of faculty and work with staff throughout the School to implement the operational, financial, and academic work of the School. The Associate Dean will represent the Dean in her absence at University and School meetings, national and international programs, and to students, alumni, and prospective donors.
The Associate Dean will engage students at a high level on independent projects, publications and exhibitions. The ideal candidate will teach both graduate and undergraduate courses and workshops, participate in critique sessions, serve on School and University committees, and actively contribute to the Yale School of Art community.
The successful candidate must hold an MFA, MA, or doctoral degree in one or more areas of the visual arts as broadly represented at the School, or in a directly related field, and must have at least 5 years teaching experience at the college level or higher and must have 5 years relevant senior experience in academic administration including management, budget, and operations. The successful candidate will have produced a record of scholarship and/or artistic practice that meets Yale’s standard for an appointment as Professor in the Practice, which is reserved for “distinguished practitioners who demonstrate eminence in the field, sustained accomplishment and sustained activity in their area of practice. They will hold national and international reputations for their transformational contributions to their practice, through creative work, professional leadership, publications, or other demonstrations of significant accomplishment.”
