The MFA programs at Northeastern University are distinguished by their emphasis on research-driven, interdisciplinary approaches to arts, media, and design.

The MFA in Experience Design adopts a holistic and integrative approach to design that focuses on the quality of the human experience in concrete situations. It employs investigation, analysis, creativity and technology as tools to understand and to mediate between human goals, needs, and desires. People’s experiences and actions, rather than purely technological capability, become the guide for innovation. Experience design moves beyond design thinking to investigate influences, orchestrate interventions, and produce outcomes that demonstrate the relevance of human-centered research and design methods.

The MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts educates emerging artists for a lifetime of creative, critical, and effective work in the public sphere. Drawing on visual and performing art, media studies, and the expanded field of design, our flexible curriculum supports the development of ambitious projects by a diverse, international group of creative practitioners. Northeastern’s longstanding commitment to interdisciplinary inquiry and engaged practice undergirds our program and provides numerous points of entry for cross-campus collaboration.

The MFA in Information Design and Visualization allows individuals from diverse backgrounds to apply data-driven design to socially relevant issues in professional, scientific, and humanities environments. Built on a core of graphic and interaction design, the program emphasizes interdisciplinary collaborative work with researchers, students and faculty to enable the better understanding and design of human and urban experience.
