Emily Carr University of Art + Design invites applications to join the graduate study and research communities for the fall 2018 school year.

Emily Carr is a global leader in dedicated research for studio-based art, design, and media. Our graduate degree programs merge research, critical theory and contemporary studio practice in an interdisciplinary environment.  We are committed to creating dynamic opportunities for graduate students through collaborative partnerships, industry alliances and practice-based research opportunities.  We invite you to examine and explore as artists, designers and media-makers and to engage and lead the cultural and creative fields.

Our new state-of-the-art campus at Great Northern Way is a space designed to support and foster innovation, collaboration and critical discourse. We are a University that exemplifies creative learning in the 21st century.

The Master of Design (MDes) is a two-year, full-time, research-oriented, interdisciplinary degree for creative professionals at the forefront of design.

As an MDes student you will have the opportunity to develop your research within a range of established and emerging design fields including: Health Design / Recreation Design / Communication Design / Product + Soft Product Design / Industrial Design / Sustainable Design / Service Systems Design / Interaction Design

The Master of Design degree prepares graduates to take leadership roles in established professions, or to initiate new ones. As a graduate, you will be poised to lead and inspire new design practice as an innovative and transformative professional.

The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) supports rigorous practice-based creative research in a program that combines instruction from expert faculty with independent supervised thesis research.

The MFA experience prepares students to become professional artists who take risks, think unconventionally, foster change and contribute to an international field. This two-year, full-time program draws on a rich speaker series, including dedicated individual studio critiques with renowned visiting artists.

A defining component of the program is the summer Internship / Independent Study period; this applied learning experience is developed in consultation with faculty and designed to develop professional momentum for students during their course of study.

Research Clusters
Graduate students will engage with opportunities emerging from the University’s ground-breaking research areas, including: Studios for Extensive Aesthetics / Studio for Critical Making / Indigenous Studies / Living Labs / Material Matters / Health Design Lab / Stereoscopic 3D / Motion Capture Studio / Prototyping, Media, and Programming Studio / IDS Wearables and Interactive Products / DESIS Design for Social Innovation Towards Sustainability
