MFA: Film captures and conveys human experience. What do you want to visualise?
MFA: Fine Art emphasises how artists can address the complexities of the contemporary world.
MFA: Photography focusses on photography’s multitude of possibilities for critical reflection and esthetic expression.

Hello from Valand Academy!

Looking for an influential educational context for MFA study, but don’t want to be just an anonymous paying number? Know that you have a contribution to make but need to figure it out, test it and contextualise it via dialogue and supportive teaching?

Then consider this:

Valand Academy has a strong reputation in training independent and critically-engaged artists in small classes of 8 to 15 students at an outward-facing, social, communitarian and peer-learning educational environment of four units: Film, Photography, Literature and Fine Art.

Our teaching is predicated on developing potential via attentiveness and reciprocity and is thought provoking but respectful. It is conducted by internationally active practitioners and includes various forms such as seminars, workshops, debates and group projects. Facilities include high-quality workspaces with excellent technical and equipment resources, student-run galleries, a cinema and public programmes of civic engagement.

Our institution is built on collaboration and dialogue. Globally connected and partnered, we foster a critical and cosmopolitan approach to investigate what is at stake and how artistic practices may worry at and critique prevailing conditions. Through multiple platforms we provide you with ways to engage in key debates and meet thinkers and practitioners from across the world, who are also figuring out what the current and future priorities are in a complex world.

You’ll be engaged in an environment populated with numerous influential practitioners and researchers and important research projects in: artist-led cultures, social practices, queer cinema, contemporary poetry, and photographic archives/ imaging practices in environmental and climate science. We inaugurated practice-based PhD studies in Sweden and Valand Academy has a strong research environment. The research is integrated in the MFA programmes, which are preparatory for future studies.

Gothenburg is a vibrant port-city at the edge of the ocean with a unique archipelago and great transit links nationally, across Scandinavia and Europe. With 50,000 students it’s a city with a kicking music scene and an arts community that is welcoming and inclusive. It includes multiple museums, theatres and events including the Gothenburg Biennial for Contemporary Art, Gothenburg Film Festival, Hasselblad Foundation, Röda Sten Konsthall, Photo Book Gbg, multiple artist-led platforms, independent publishers, a great book fair and dance and theatre festivals.

We don’t believe all artists follow the same pathway or come from the same background or heritages and we welcome diverse perspectives and practices.
