New Programs at SFAI Expand the Tradition of Contemporary Art Education

San Francisco Art Institute announces a new and innovative academic structure for contemporary art education that redefines artistic practice, whether in the studio, across disciplines, or in communities.

SFAI’s academic structure is founded on the School of Studio Practice, consisting of SFAI’s departments of Painting, Sculpture, Film, Photography, Design Technology, Printmaking, and New Genres; and the School of Interdisciplinary Studies, offering new degree programs in History and Theory of Contemporary Art (BA, MA), Urban Studies (BA, MA), and Museum and Exhibition Studies (MA).

“The new academic structure is an intensification of the relationship between the practices, histories, and theories of contemporary art and culture,” says SFAI Dean Okwui Enwezor, renowned writer, curator, and critic. “I believe we have to respond to the needs of our diverse student body and to an enlarged understanding of the canons of art. The establishment of these two schools offers our students a curricular matrix in which to develop their unique approaches to artmaking.”

SFAI’s School of Studio Practice is dedicated to rigorous studio practice. It is centered on the development of the artist’s vision through studio-based experiments and is underlined by the understanding that the work of the artist is an essential part of society.

SFAI’s School of Interdisciplinary Studies supports the role of research and other forms of education and is based on the premise that critical reading, thinking, and writing informed by an in-depth understanding of theory and practice are essential for engaging and understanding contemporary art and global society. The School of Interdisciplinary Studies offers three areas of study: History and Theory of Contemporary Art (BA, MA); Urban Studies (BA, MA); and Museum and Exhibition Studies (MA). Also under its umbrella are SFAI’s four centers for interdisciplinary study: Art Science; Public Practice; Word, Text, and Image; and Media Culture. Each center sponsors symposia, seminars, exhibitions, research fellowships, and residencies at SFAI.

SFAI Dean of Graduate Studies, Renée Green, noted international artist, filmmaker, and writer, explains that at SFAI “students are taught that the context in which we live, create, and work is inextricably global and therefore inextricably linked. Imagination combined with critical intelligence, shaped by historical knowledge, in conjunction with contemporary thought and practice is crucial to any attempt to create in a distinctive way.”
