Glenn Ligon works with a variety of media, textual materials and images to address issues of race, sexuality, identity and language. He has had numerous solo exhibitions including shows at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Hirshhorn Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Adam Weinberg is the Alice Pratt Brown Director of the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Since he was included, at age 23, in the seminal 1959 Museum of Modern Art exhibition Sixteen American Icons, Frank Stella has consistently challenged the conventions of painting and sculpture. As the Norton Lecturer at Harvard University in 1986, Stella also established himself as one of the most thoughtful and articulate artists of his generation.
