Sotheby’s Institute of Art has academic centers in London, New York and Singapore, reflecting its commitment to the globalization of art and its markets. The Institute’s core faculty includes distinguished scholars and practitioners who bring a broad range of experience to the classroom, covering everything from nuances of curatorial scholarship and the subtleties of art valuation, to the inside workings of auction houses and galleries and the basics of copyright and tax law. Regular lecturers include expert specialists from Sotheby’s auction house, gallery directors, artists, critics, scholars, dealers, art lawyers, marketing and public relations specialists and practitioners from major art institutions and museums. The Institute has more than 6,000 alumni worldwide. Many direct galleries, are executives at museums, foundations and auction houses, or pursue careers in art journalism, art consulting and related professions. They keep in touch via the Institute’s alumni network.

Academic strengths
An object-based approach to teaching is a distinguished feature of Sotheby’s Institute of Art and a cornerstone of its programs. Students learn through hands-on examination of works of art in galleries, museums and private collections. The programs are taught by highly-respected scholars and practitioners, distinguished visiting professors and specialist lecturers who provide students with a breadth of knowledge and experience, as well as an opportunity to develop a network of professional relationships.

Short Courses
A variety of short courses and intensive programs focused on the fast-changing global art market are offered in New York. The courses reflect current trends in the market and combine academic study with the possibility of site visits, field work and hands-on instruction. They provide students with the skills and knowledge to succeed in the international art world. Summer Study
