With an operating budget of 20 million USD, SMFA enrolls approximately 1,375 full- and part-time undergraduate, graduate and non-matriculated students from 34 countries and 43 states. SMFA alumni from every period are synonymous with contemporary art and include Allan Rohan Crite, Will Barnet, Ellsworth Kelly, Richard Scarry, Cy Twombly, Joan Jonas, Ellen Gallagher, David Lynch, Nan Goldin and Mike and Doug Starn.
The mission of the School is to provide an education in the fine arts—for undergraduate and graduate artists—that is interdisciplinary and self-directed. This education values cultural, artistic and intellectual diversity; it embraces a wide range of media; it stresses the development of individual vision and its relation to culture in general; it values equally the knowledge gained by thinking and doing; it is deeply engaged with the world as a whole. If the mission is constant, its practice is always transforming.
Since 1945, SMFA has partnered with Tufts University for our degree-granting programs including a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Arts in Teaching, Art Education and Master of Fine Arts. Other partnerships include the ProArts Consortium (six Boston-area professional visual and performing arts colleges), Northeastern University and MIT.
The Provost will be responsible for articulating the long-term vision and strategic plan to guide the development of the college to be a model and leader for excellence in education and the arts. S/He will lead major institutional reporting and planning, including regional and national accreditation, facilities and technology and play a key role in developing and fostering positive relationships between the college and its various constituencies to include the SMFA Board of Governors, the Board of Trustees of the Museum, corporation staff, students, alumni, the donor community and the general public.
Other essential functions of the Provost include:
• Managing the academic organizational structure of the college and articulating the roles and responsibilities of the major academic leaders and all faculty within that structure.
• Formulating a strategic, long-term enrollment plan and overseeing its implementation, including a comprehensive student success initiative.
• Formulating recommendations for college financial aid policy and overseeing the Office of Financial Aid.
• Determining budget priorities and developing an annual budget for the college in consultation with the President, Senior Finance Officer and Senior Development Officer.
• Developing the resources necessary to realize the aspirations of the college and participating directly in fundraising initiatives.
• Stewarding a culture of diversity at the college to include teaching, learning, service and scholarship as expressions of that commitment.
• As directed by the President, serving as a spokesperson on behalf of the college and the MFA.
Qualifications: Ph.D. or other terminal degree with a record of accomplishment in both education and the arts; experience in operational leadership and management of a complex academic organization; demonstrated commitment to the principles of diversity, fairness and service; demonstrated leadership fostering excellence in teaching, scholarship and creative work; experience with strategic planning, budgeting, personnel and fundraising; experience developing and overseeing programs that increase student success and overall enrollment; experience in developing partnerships between a college and other institutions.
